Fun with English! comes to Tudan Admin March 6, 2011 Christian Education, Community outreach, Grace Methodist Church, Social Concerns Ministry Group pic Story and pic by James TC Wong March 5, Miri – With the conclusion of The Reading Bus programme last December, our church has today embarked on another project to benefit the people in Tudan. Fun with English! is a free enrichment programme open to primary school children. Its aim is to develop the three basic skills needed for English literacy – reading, listening and speaking. The fortnightly class endorsed by the Social Concerns Ministry in our church is led by volunteer Tang Chew Moi. There is also a support team of committed volunteers including the youth leaders from Gereja Tudan Methodist (GTM) to conduct the lessons. Curriculum includes games and singing, art and craft, teaching of phonics, word puzzles and story reading. All these activities seek to improve and reinforce the three basic skills. The programme also involves GTM in the long term with their youth leaders selected and trained as facilitators. Rev. Lisa Ting accompanied by Ling Hui Chu of the Social Concerns Ministry dropped by the venue at GTM to greet the volunteers and children during the new class registration. Also present was Pastor Chan Jing Mei of GMT. “We are blessed beyond measure by the Christian love and care shown by these volunteers from our church. Surely our brothers and sisters are responding to God’s calling otherwise they won’t simply commit to a nine-month duration to serve. Essentially we are reaching out to the poor and needy students here in Tudan. Many find it difficult to cope with the increasing demands to perform well in English in school – in fact many fail to make it beyond secondary education,” commented Rev. Lisa. The registration was encouraging with 43 children signing up. As the programme runs through from March 5th to December 3rd, more volunteers will be needed.
