Since its formation in 2002, the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade have jointly organized the annual event to showcase their merits to proud parents, well-wishers and the congregation. It is also during this occasion that both Captains of the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade would formally present their company report. Well-known internationally, the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade are interdenominational Christian youth uniformed organizations since 1883 and 1893 respectively. At 8:35 am the 19th century hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers” resonated in the church sanctuary. The solemn Colour March-in by the flag bearers commenced witnessed by a standing congregation. The praise and worship was led by the Boys’ Brigade followed by an opening prayer of thanks by their Captain Roseline Lee. An Officers’ and Company’s dedication was led by the Boys’ Brigade Chaplain Pastor Tiong Huong Ong and the Girls’ Brigade Chaplain Rev. Lisa Ting. The Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade Officers were appreciated for their selfless dedication with a specially handcrafted card by the Girls. In presenting the Boys’ Brigade report, Captain Lee praised God for the good response from SJK (C) Chung Hua Pujut with the addition of 50 Boys bringing the total membership to 100 this year. “For the first time since the inception of 4th Miri Company, we are pleased to announce that we have a record batch of 16 Seniors,” she said proudly. Captain Lee also thanked the new Chaplain Pastor Tiong and all the officers including the helpers for their selfless dedication and love for the ministry. There were two promotions for the Boys; L/Cpl. Yong Shiun was promoted to Corporal while Cpl. Sim Soon Sin was promoted to Sergeant. Girls’ Brigade Captain Tiong Siew Ping thanked and welcomed their new Chaplain Rev. Lisa Ting. With a sharp increase in membership to 120 Girls this year, the new Captain acknowledged the challenging task ahead as more serving hands would be needed. She also thanked all the officers and helpers for their love and time. Both Boys and Girls presented performances in singing, dance and gymnastics. The Senior Boys presented a spectacular fancy drill much to the delight of the congregation. Pastor Tiong at the pulpit. Using Hebrews 6:19 as the guiding verse, Pastor Tiong preached an encouraging sermon entitled “Ship in the Storm”. In his opening introduction, Pastor Tiong said that it was a blessed coincidence that Hebrews 6:19 coincided with the Enrolment Sunday’s date of June 19. Pastor Tiong in his sermon gave several examples of people in history and in the Bible weathering the “storms” and having Jesus as their “anchors” in their lives. The good shepherd also commented how interesting on the word “ship” is found in words like Lordship, Ownership, Citizenship and Worship. In the same breadth he encouraged the congregation to be closely connected and be together in a ‘ship’. “Because in challenging times we can help and encourage one another with Christ Jesus as our anchor,” he concluded.
