Youth Alpha Facilitators Training Admin April 23, 2012 Alpha Course, Community outreach, Grace Methodist Church Look at my starfish, say the participants. A man was walking along a beach in Mexico. And he saw that what had happened is the tide had gone out and there were tens of thousands of starfish left stranded on the beach, dying for lack of oxygen, in the heat of the sun. And there was a young boy who was picking up the starfish one at a time, going down to the sea and just throwing them in, and going back to get another one, pick it up and going back and throwing it into the sea. And this man went up to him and he said, `Look, can’t you see—there are tens of thousands of starfish out here! I don’t really think that what you’re doing is going to make any difference.’ And the young boy picked up another one, and he went down to the water’s edge and he threw it in the sea, and he said, `I bet it made a difference for that one!’ by James TC Wong Apr 22, Miri – Following last year’s successful introduction of the Youth Alpha, Grace MC has again provided an opportunity to train student facilitators to run the course. According to the Alpha Malaysia website, a condensed version (School Alpha) of the Youth Alpha is run in schools as either part of the extra-curricular activity (where the Christian Fellowship is allowed to run) or in Small Groups where students meet at their own convenience. In addition to the know-how in facilitators training and equipping of skills, the participants were also briefed on the background, components and core values of the Youth Alpha. “Youth Alpha is effective in reaching out to my generation. We can encounter God in different ways. I’m glad this facilitators training has given me more ideas on how to share the gospel with my friends,” said 16 year-old student, Cheryl Supang. “This training has answered some of my questions in handling my peers on how to bring them together,” added Form Five student Tien Eu Min. Eight core sessions each lasting for about an hour were conducted by Chrisanne Chin and James Kok from Alpha Malaysia. More information on the Youth Alpha is available at their website.
