Seminar on Depression Admin July 3, 2012 Christian Living, Community outreach, Grace Methodist Church Rev. Dr. Khoo’s expertise lies in Pastoral Theology, Counseling, Old Testament, Exegesis (OT) and Wesleyan Theology. by James TC Wong June 29, Miri – In recognizing the need to create an awareness among its congregation, Grace MC invited Rev. Dr. Khoo Ho Peng from the Sibu Methodist Theological School (MTS) to give a talk on depression. According to the World Health Organization, depression is projected to be second only to heart disease as the leading cause of debilitating illness across the globe by the year 2020. “Though it is a difficult task to treat depression as there are no definitive answers or quick fixes, there is hope in seeking His guidance and applying the knowledge through counseling and medical treatment,” said Rev. Dr. Khoo, who is also the Dean of Students at MTS. During the talk the main topics covered were understanding and overcoming depression. Rev. Dr. Khoo also explained the differences between normal and abnormal moods of people, and how to differentiate a bad mood from a depression. “Depression has many masks,” he added. “And there is no perfect diagnosis to recognize it.” As a caring Christian community, Rev. Dr. Khoo reminded the congregation to avoid misusing the spiritual approach like “trust God and the depression will go away” mentality. “Depression can be treated by early recognition, qualified physicians, a good listening ear (empathy) and the proper use of medication,” he summed up. There was a Q & A session before the seminar came to a close.
